Crowne Plaza was established in 1983 as an upscale sister brand to Holiday Inn, with its first hotel opening that year in Rockville, Maryland. In 1988 Bass PLC, the forerunner of today's IHG Hotels & Resorts, acquired the Holiday Corporation, and the brand was renamed Crowne Plaza Hotels in 1994.
