Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt

Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt traces its history back as far as the tenth century, when Queen Gerberga granted her possessions in Meerssen, including a wooded estate, to the abbey of Reims. The estate took its current name in 1381, when Jan van Hees left the land to Servaes van Mulcken, who named it Vaeshartelt and built a fortified farmhouse on the site.

From country estate to castle hotel

The estate's most significant transformation came under Maastricht industrialist Petrus Regout, who turned it into an elegant residence with roof gardens, greenhouses and decorated salons in the nineteenth century. In 1853 he commissioned the Belgian garden architect Jean Gindra to design the surrounding parkland. The estate was briefly owned by the Dutch royal family, including King Willem II, before its transformation into a hotel and conference centre in 1994.

Today Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt combines centuries of history with contemporary comfort across its 83 hotel rooms and one suite. The grounds offer guests space to explore, including:

• Fifteen meeting rooms for business events

A national monument

The partly eighteenth and partly nineteenth century castle, together with its park and grounds, is a designated rijksmonument and forms part of the Buitengoed Geul & Maas landscape area on the edge of Maastricht.

A place for the long term

Since 1992, the Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt Foundation has cared for the estate's landscape and buildings, ensuring it remains a living place for encounter, inspiration and new stories rather than a museum piece.
