De L'Europe

De L'Europe Amsterdam traces its origins to the fifteenth century, when Emperor Maximilian I ordered the construction of a fortress, Het Rondeel, to protect the city. An inn was built on part of its foundations in 1638, beginning a hospitality legacy on the site that continues to this day. The current hotel building opened its doors in 1896, designed by architect Willem Hamer Jr.
A Heineken connection
In the 1950s, Alfred Freddy Heineken became a frequent guest of the hotel and eventually bought it, making De L'Europe the first and only family owned luxury hotel in Amsterdam. The hotel's Freddy's Bar is named in his honour, and nods to his legacy can still be found throughout the property.
Amsterdam's guardian of culture
Set on the banks of the Amstel river, overlooking the Munt and within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Dam Square, De L'Europe positions itself as a custodian of local craftsmanship and culture. The hotel's culinary offering reflects this ambition, including:
- The Michelin starred fine dining restaurant Flore
- The classic French brasserie Marie
- The authentic Italian trattoria Graziella
- The speakeasy bar Chapter 1896
